Born a shepherd's daughter, Arachne grew up around sheep and fiber arts. Most notably weaving. She loved working at the loom, passing the shuttle back and forth and seeing her work grow with each pass. As the years passed and her skills grew she began to weave incredibly detailed tapestries. Depicting the work of the gods, and scenes of the village.

Arachne decided to host a weaving competition at the village. Showcasing some of her work for the people to admire. An old woman in a thick plain cloak came to see the work, none of the villagers seemed to recognize her. Arachne came to speak with her and told her Athena herself had blessed her with her weaving talents, and she took the blessing and grew the skills tenfold to where now she was much better than the goddess herself. The woman chastised Arachne for her hubris, to which Arachne scoffed, "If the goddess disagrees, she can come down and prove me wrong!"

The woman shed her cloak revealing a pure white chiton that appeared to be woven from clouds, and a gold helmet with a red plume, a spear and shield at her side, "If it is a challenge you want, it is a challenge you shall receive."

The goddess and the mortal began to weave. Athena's tapestry portrayed four contests between mortals and gods in which the mortals were punished for their blatant show of hubris. Arachne's wove the scenes of the gods abusing mortals, often killing and defiling them for their own amusement.

After the last pass of their shuttles, they turned to admire each others works. Arachne noted a missed weft strand with a smug expression, while Athena stared in horror at the furthered pridefulness Arachne exhibited, also noting the superior workmanship. In her rage, Athena took her scissor and slashed Arachne's work to shreds before beating the mortal with her own shuttle.

Overcome by shame, Arachne strung a noose from a tree in her field and took her own life. Athena took pity on the mortal and transformed her into a spider, so she and her descendants could weave webs for all time.
