Marsha P. Johnson is one of the first names that come to mind when talking about the Stonewall Riots or Gay Liberation. She and Sylvia Rivera were two of the many trans activists who were present at the riots and participated in the multi-day uprising that started June 28, 1969 and ended July 3, 1969 at the Stonewall Inn on Christopher Street in New York City.

After the Riots, Johnson and Rivera formed STAR, Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries. They secured a rental through the mafia. The 4 bed, 2 bath building had no electricity, heat, and inadequate plumping. Johnson and Rivera worked alongside Andorra Martin, Bebe Scarpi, Bubbles Rose Lee, and Zazu Nova to fix the house up with goals of creating a safe space to bring in the trans youth from the streets.

As with many queer people alive in the 1980s, Marsha was a figure withing the AIDS Crisis, or as it was known then: GRID, Gay Related Immune Deficiency. She was often known to help nurse those infected as well as organizing the first AIDS Walk in Los Angeles and participating in many AIDS Dance-a-thons.

On July 2, 1992, Marsha would leave her house for the last time. Four days later, her body was found in the Hudson River. Police called it suicide. But all those around her knew she would never take her own life.

Marsha "Pay it no Mind" Johnson is remembered as an activist, an icon, and a legend within the Queer community. One of my favorite quotes from her is "Darling, I want my Gay Rights now. I think it's about time the gay brothers and sisters got their rights. Especially the women."

As queer people and allies, we need to be aware that all the rights we now get to enjoy, have been torn from the unwilling hands of the oppressor. Most often by the most oppressed of us. We are stronger as a community. And remember, the first Pride, was a riot.

This yarn is dyed in honor of Marsha P. Johnson's legacy. Think of her while you work with it.

Wet block when finished working. Some color bleeding may happen on first wash.

The yarn is dyed in the same pot, but that by no means promises they will each take the dye the same. If you are making a large project, please feel free to reach out and I can work with you to ensure the yarn you get is from the same dyelot, or dye them special for you. I want to ensure your product turns out as beautifully as you imagine it!

Studio is not pet-free, cats and dogs are present. I try my best to avoid their contact with product, but alas. They are powerful beings.

Handwash with wash of your choice, lay flat to dry.

As this is a wool product it is fairly naturally self-cleansing. Socks should be handwashed after approximately 3 wears. Sweaters are good for up to 10 wears. And Shawls/Scarfs/Wraps are good for months.

Or you can use your own judgement and wash them when they start to smell. Do your thing, boo.

Handwash with your favorite soap, and lay flat to dry.
